Faculty/Staff

SDSU faculty and staff play an important role in student success. This page provides information about the Wintrode Tutoring Program, advice for how to refer students to tutoring, and links to resources about academic success.

Tutor Selection:  We accept applications throughout the year; however, most hiring occurs in November for the spring semester and in April for the fall semester. In order to qualify as tutors, students must…

  • Have successfully completed the course for which tutoring is being provided, or a higher level course in that subject area, with a grade of A or B

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the subject matter

  • Be able to explain concepts effectively

  • Work comfortably with people from various backgrounds

Tutor Training:  All tutors attend small group training sessions throughout the semester. The training program is certified by the College Reading and Learning Association. Beginning with the Fall 2007 semester, tutor training will be offered as a semester-long course and will be available to all SDSU tutors. Training topics include...

  • Tutoring Policies and Procedures

  • Goal Setting

  • Communication Skills

  • Tutoring Diverse Student Populations

  • Study Skills

  • Critical Thinking and Problem-solving

Referring Students to Tutoring:  There are many academic supports available to SDSU students; the key is to know what supports are available and then to encourage students to utilize those programs. A list of resources is available at the Wintrode Student Success Center or on the Wintrode Tutoring Program website. The list is updated each semester; therefore, it may take a few weeks before the information is posted.

Students may feel uncomfortable asking for help. Encourage students to talk with a tutor early in the semester. It is much easier to cancel tutoring appointments than to get back on track after falling behind. Also let students know that tutoring is not a remedial activity. Tutoring is an academic support program that is available to all students who want to make a positive academic change.

Faculty / Staff Resources:  Below are links to resources that contain information about college students and academic success.  Coming Soon!
